Carbon Re and Materials Processing Institute join forces for ground-breaking use of Artificial Intelligence to decarbonise steel

    February 2, 2023

The steel industry is one of the most significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions globally, accounting for 8% of global emissions, and is facing tremendous pressure from high energy prices and growing carbon taxes.

Carbon Re, an AI and climate tech start-up spun out of UCL, and the University of Cambridge, is partnering with the Middlesbrough-based Materials Processing Institute – the UK’s leading materials and industrial decarbonisation research organisation – to adapt Carbon Re’s state-of-the-art AI technology to steelmaking.

If successful, the solution is expected to enable steel producers to cut millions of pounds in energy costs and tens of thousands of tons of CO2 emission per plant annually.

UK Research and Innovation funded this study through the ISCF Transforming Foundation Industries – Investor Partnerships Programme
